Morty and Esmerelda

We are finally getting a dishwasher.

Our old dishwasher, whom we shall call Morty, was a sinister type.
Mom says I should call him Stalin instead. Or Adolf.
Morty presented himself as a compact, clean, efficient sort of fellow.
I'll just squeeze into this little corner of the kitchen, he said.
Don't mind me.
But he wasn't happy in his corner. He wanted to spread.
Claim his territory. Alpha male style.
Every time we ran a load of dishes, he started to leak.
A treacherous puddle turned into a lake.
Waiting for an unsuspecting family member to slip and fall.
And when they did, Morty would stare stonily down at them.
What? He'd say. I didn't do anything. I'm just washing dishes...
But he didn't even do that well.
Morty, mom would say, these dishes aren't clean! They look the same as when they went in!
But mom, Morty would say, I washed them! I did my best! What more can you ask of me?
If whining didn't work
the next tactic was oh, but I'm so very tired...
Morty, you're 3 years old. You're not allowed to be tired.
Finally, Morty was sent away.

But our hearts had been hurt. We had opened our home to that dishwasher, and he had spurned us. And our dishes. Could we trust another dishwasher?
That was a year ago.
And we have finally decided that yes, we can.
Today we are welcoming Esmerelda into our home.
Hopefully she fares better.

But if she doesn't, we'll survive.
I actually got pretty attached to my therapeutic dishwashing time.
And mom is sad that cleaning the kitchen won't take as long.
She won't get through nearly as many books on tape.

When I grow up...

When I grow up I want
My house to be a gathering place, with a big front porch where people stop and chat on warm summer evenings
hand-holding walks with my husband
to know all my neighbors' names, and them to know my children
to be the kind of neighbor who knows when something is wrong, and is right there with dinner, flowers, or a kind word
to make pizza on friday nights and have waffle breakfasts for dinner on Conference weekend
storytime before bed
a vegetable garden, right next to my berry bushes, and under my tree house
giant canvas paintings hanging in my house
Some painted by me, some by my children
My children to feel like artists
to organize big group service projects
to laugh every day
to learn how to love winter...or to live somewhere without snow...
to be patient and strong when facing life
to sometimes stop and watch the sunrise
to have dance parties in the kitchen with my daughters
to remember to have my fifteen minutes with my husband every day
to be deeply in love with him
to go to the temple often
to learn to pray always

What do you want when you grow up?

Breaking Free...

I'm slowly trying to overcome my addiction to technology.
I got rid of texting over a month ago and don't even miss it,
and I just deactivated my facebook account.
(Because tonight I was labeled a 'facebook addict')
But who knows how long that'll last...
And yes, I give in to peer pressure.

And I don't think I'll ever get over Hulu.
I mean, what would I do with all my free time??
Maybe get better grades.

Oh well. Baby steps.

And I just now realized the irony of blogging as a way to document my triumph over technology.

Dear husband,

I sure hope you're good at math.
Because I am failing regression analysis.
So I'm afraid it's going to be up to you to help the kids with their math homework.

Also, if you could come along before grad school, that would be nice
Because I might need help with my homework too.

And I'd like you to know that my mom skills are coming along just great
Christian just puked on me.
Twice.

And I handled it very well.

Aren't you glad I'm recording all these treasured moments for you?

Love, Me.

It's March!

Oh bliss!
It's already March.
Which means there's only 6 1/2 weeks of school left.
6 1/2 weeks until my 2 year hiatus from school.
Less than 4 weeks until I can start my mission papers
5 weeks until I go to San Francisco for a PSA conference :)
2 1/2 weeks until the cousin camping trip in Moab
I love that I can count things down in weeks!

March, I have never loved you so much before.
